Car involved in crash that killed ‘Fast and Furious’ star was driven at unsafe speed

RECOMMENDED: Car logos quiz The Los Angeles Times this afternoon quoted Sheriff Commander Mike Parker as saying: Investigators determined the cause of the fatal solo-vehicle collision was unsafe speed for the roadway conditions. Speed and driver judgment were primary factors. No mechanical fault was found with the Porsche, although the tires on the car were nine years old, and that was found to be a contributing factor. Even tires on low-mileage high-performance cars should be replaced at six years, manufacturers advise, and some sources cited a call in the Porsche’s owners manual to change them at four years. Photo - Photo by Robert Medley

The dead were the driver of a KIA truck, suspected to be about 30 years old, and a driver’s mate on the same truck, about 25 years old. The injured were the drivers of a Land Cruiser and a VW Passat saloon car and three other children who were seated on the front passenger’s seat of the KIA truck which was supposed to be occupied by one person. Eyewitness Account An eyewitness told the Daily Graphic that the accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2016 when one of the front tyres of the KIA truck burst while the vehicle was moving from Akoti to Kasoa. “We heard the sound of a burst tyre and l saw the driver trying to control the steering wheel, he said. The eyewitness said the KIA went out of control, drifted from its lane and slammed into the Land Cruiser, which was coming from the opposite direction, while the VW Passat saloon car, which was also behind the KIA truck, ran into the pile-up. Immediately the KIA?hit the Land Cruiser, the mate, who was in the bucket of the truck, was thrown over the cars and his head hit the road. We saw blood all over and started running towards that direction. The KIA truck was loaded with musical speakers and some other musical gadgets used for outdoor events. The driver of the Land Cruiser suffered a serious head injury, while the driver of the Passat was pulled out of his car by occupants of other cars. Firefighters and Police A few minutes after the accidents, firefighters and police personnel of the Highway Patrol Unit arrived, following distress calls from people in nearby communities and eyewitnesses. The firefighters and the police had to cut the door at the drivers side of the KIA truck to reach the driver, whose two legs were trapped in the car. The injured were rushed to the Winneba Hospital, while the bodies of the two deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.

As with Question Time, every single member of the audience was telephoned and interrogated about their political views before places were handed out evenly to sensible conservatives and whackadoodle Left-wingers. So the problem doesnt lie with the production staff on these shows; its with the character of the Right-wing guests like me. Conservatism is reasonable, thoughtful, respectful and it makes for lousy TV. Panellists who have only 30 seconds to make a point struggle to articulate complex ideas; they either run out of time or are forced to blurt out, You just cant trust the French! Either way, they dont give easy, liberal applause lines like, Eat the rich or Its my body, my rules. Likewise, Right-wing audience members are usually far too polite. The Left-wingers train their larynxes by shouting on picket lines. Conservatives only ever raise their voice to ask a deaf maiden aunt to pass the sugar. So the solution to the conservatives problem is to change the format. Were served better by long, discursive debates that preferably have no audience.

Louisiana Truck Crash Spills 75,000 Corn Dogs Across Interstate 220

Months after 40,000 pounds of ham spilled off a Georgia onramp, a semi crash scattered thousands of corn dogs across an interstate. According to local news station KTBS , a tractor trailer hauling a load full of packaged corn dogs overturned on I-220 outside of Shreveport, La., Tuesday morning, spilling 75,000 sticks of the fried snack across the highway. There were no injuries, but the mounds of spilled dogs caused nine hours of delays while police cleaned up the delicious debris. The crash was apparently a big hit with the locals, many of whom scooped up the free snacks fate had tossed into their laps. “It’s a big mess, but a lot of folks will be eating pretty good this afternoon,” Corporal Marcus Hines of the Shreveport police told WWLTV . After providing the community with such a bounty, the driver of the truck will not face charges. Follow PEOPLE on Facebook!

A Two Semi-Truck Accident Sends One Truck into the Water

After the impact, the bus careened down an embankment and overturned into a stand of buckeye trees. No students were onboard when the crash occurred, because the driver had just dropped them off at Calaveras High School. After the incident, bus driver Siobhan Fischer, 48, of Mokelumne Hill, was trapped hanging in her seatbelt and unable to free herself from the bus, which was lying on its right side. An unknown Good Samaritan made his way down the steep embankment, entered the bus through an emergency door in the roof and helped Fischer get loose. The pair exited through the rear of the bus and Fischer was taken to Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas to be treated for minor injuries. At 8:28 a.m. Fischer was driving her bus westbound and her bus was completely in her lane, according to Officer Rebecca Myers with the CHP. Tanker truck driver Timothy Lupkes, 55, was driving his truck eastbound. A video from the school bus shows Lupkes allowed his eastbound truck to travel well across the double yellow lines into Fischers westbound lane, Myers said. This caused the truck to sideswipe the school bus. The two large vehicles scraped against each other for their entire lengths, leaving a wake of broken mirrors, dented metal and debris along the highway. The impact sent Fischers bus over a steep embankment, and Lupkes pulled his truck over at his first opportunity and cooperated with investigators, Myers said.

Paul Walker crash caused by ‘unsafe speed,’ investigators say

30. “Investigators determined the cause of the fatal solo-vehicle collision was unsafe speed for the roadway conditions,” sheriff’s Cmdr. Mike Parker said. Also PAUL WALKER: 1973-2013 The report came the same day that Universal Studios previewed the upcoming film “Fast & Furious 7” at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, which gave the first glimpse of Walker’s final performance in the popular franchise. When Walker died, he still had a substantial portion of the film to shoot, and the studio pushed the film’s release from this summer to April 2015. Some reports have indicated that Walker’s character will be retired in the upcoming film, and that CGI and body doubles will be used in certain scenes. In the sheriff’s department report, officials found no evidence of any car system failures, but at least two of the tires were more than nine years old. Porsche recommends that tires be replaced after four years. As a result, “the driveability and handling characteristics” of the car “may have been compromised,” California Highway Patrol investigators wrote.

Car crashes into tractor trailer, bursts into flames after driver falls asleep at wheel

“The vehicle had no mechanical failure and the damage that occurred to the vehicle was from the collision,” accident reconstruction specialists with the Highway Patrol wrote, according to the person, who requested anonymity because the report has not been officially released yet. A spokeswoman said Tuesday that the Sheriff’s Department had no new information to release regarding the investigation into the Nov. 30 crash. “We will have something in the very near future,” department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida wrote in an email. The CHP declined comment. The Associated Press reported in December that investigators had found no evidence that the car had mechanical problems and ruled out debris or other roadway conditions. Subsequently, Porsche sent engineers to California to review the rare car’s wreckage. Though it was badly mangled and burned, the engineers were able to do a thorough analysis. They found no problems with the car’s electrical systems, brakes, throttle, fuel system, steering, suspension or other systems. Porsche declined a request for comment Tuesday. The conclusion about the speed was based on a “yaw” mark on the road that the car’s tire left on the road in an area of industrial office parks in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Two people are dead after a car crashes into a building

Mathew Reyes, a counter-sniper officer, had the “slight odor” of alcohol on his breath after the accident, according to the report. The Florida State trooper who responded to the accident conducted a sobriety test, but did not find that Reyes was impaired. The police officer conducted a pen-eye test, not a breathalyzer test, a Secret Service spokesperson told the Post. Reyes was cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic and causing the accident. Reyes tried to cross both lanes of traffic when exiting a parking lot, and the Dodge Caravan he was driving was struck by an oncoming truck. Reyes and another Secret Service officer who was in the car with him were sent home from the trip, according to Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan. Paul Walker car crash was caused by speed – not mechanical problems: investigators

Paul Walker of ‘Fast and Furious’ died Nov. 30 of a horrific car crash. That morning, he reportedly asked his mom to retire and take care of his daughter.

A single car accident north of Summit Road near Tenya Lodge in Fish Camp resulted in one passenger being medevaced to Community Regional Medical Center Wednesday, March 26 after the vehicle he was traveling in lost control and traveled down an embankment. Auto Regulator Has 51 People Tracing 250 Million Cars

Citing 2000 auto-safety law, panel chairman questions GM delay

7. Thats when GM notified the agency it was recalling some models of the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 because of reports that jostling key rings could cause the engines to stall and air bags to fail to deploy. GM has since said it got its first internal report on ignition-switch problems in small cars in 2001, while developing the Saturn Ion. NHTSA officials asked GM as far back as 2007 about those switches after discovering a fatal crash linked to engine-power loss and air-bag failure. 40,000 Complaints Inspector General Calvin Scovels review will be the fourth into the effectiveness of NHTSAs defects-screening process since 2002. In 2011, a report found the office didnt meet its own timeliness goals in more than half the cases and didnt document meetings with manufacturers. The report found no evidence that the offices handling of the Toyota investigation was influenced by former employees who had gone to work for automakers. The NHTSA office reviews consumer complaints for the continuously changing makes and models, which includes 15.4 million newly registered cars and light trucks last year alone, according to IHS Automotive. The agency reviews more than 40,000 consumer complaints a year, which it codes by automotive part, make and model year. Its using more sophisticated data analysis tools, including software provided by International Business Machines Corp.

The Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation Act that emerged in 2000, amid media reports that Ford’s Explorer SUVs were rolling over and killing people after their Bridgestone Corp. Firestone tires fell apart, led to a doubling of the spending on defects investigations. The law, known as the Tread Act, also gave the regulators more information about emerging defects through quarterly reports compiling warranty claims, death and injury data from every automaker. That was supposed to give NHTSA the raw data that companies compile and scan for anomalies that would indicate a defect. The system didn’t catch the reports of faulty floor mats and sticky pedals in Toyota vehicles that became a focus of congressional hearings in 2010. It also didn’t catch the GM ignition-switch defect. “A massive information breakdown at NHTSA has led to deadly vehicle breakdowns on our roads,” said Sen, Edward Markey, D-Mass., who along with Sen. Richard Blumenthal , D-Conn., introduced the legislation Tuesday to make more defect data available to the public. GM declined to comment on the legislation. Wade Newton, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers trade group in Washington, said the current warning system has led to more than 5,500 recalls. “It seems premature to assume there are systemic problems, much less to identify specific legislative fixes, before investigations are complete and the data necessary for thoughtful decision-making are gathered,” Newton said. Acting NHTSA Administrator David Friedman and GM CEO Mary Barra are scheduled to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on April 1.

Learning The Basics for Car Safety

March 26, 2014 – Getting out of a sticky situation can be as easy as knowing how to jump start your car. That was the message at Tires for Less as folks gathered for a hands on car care demonstration. From oil changes tofixing a flat tire, or just checking your tire pressure, the group went through the basics of car maintenance and avoiding being stranded. Mechanics showed different tools and how to use them as well as stressing the importance of having an emergency kit in your car. It’s all about information and empowerment. Organizers are hoping to hold the basic car care demonstrations at least twice a year. Copyright 2014 Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc. All rights reserved. Vehicle safety agency NHTSA underfunded, under fire

David L. Strickland, NHTSA

As you can clearly hear, the BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car has a mighty roar. Mind you, it is fitted with an Akrapovic exhaust system, which the standard car does not get as standard. The Safety Car also features a full host of M Performance Kits, including front and rear aprons, side skirts, and special wheels all blacked-out which is optional extra for the normal models. In terms of engine and powertrain, the BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car is the same as the standard model, boasting a 430 horsepower turbocharged straight-six a return to form for the M3/M4 and a M-DCT transmission. You can order the road-going model with a manual gearbox if you want, but be advised that one is slower and less efficient. BMW M is proud to be part of the MotoGP success story for the 16th season running. We are delighted that the BMW M4 Coupe experienced its baptism of fire as a safety car out on the racetrack, said Thomas Schemera, Director of Sales and Marketing BMW M GmbH. Four generations of the BMW M3 have combined motorsport genes and unlimited suitability for daily use into one highly emotional overall concept. The BMW M4 Coupe is a natural progression of these fundamental ideas.

State Police Identify Driver, Victims In Logan Car Crash

Sheriff’s Office The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s office made a surprising discovery recently after deputies responded to a single vehicle accident. The crash happened on March 21st in the 168th block of Highway 441 North. Deputies found the driver of the car, Abey DiazPino, age 44, dead at the scene. Paul Walker crash caused by ‘unsafe speed,’ investigators say

Witnesses told a sheriff’s deputy that they thought the car could have been traveling in excess of 100 mph. Post-crash investigators noted several issues with the condition of the car, which logged just 3,333 miles as of September despite having several prior owners, including IndyCar driver Graham Rahal: Its original exhaust system had been modified in a way that could allow it to go faster. View gallery In this Nov. 30, 2013 photo released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department on Tuesday, March Its left front and right rear tires were about nine years old; the owner’s manual suggests changing the tires after four years. As a result of the age, “the drivability and handling characteristics … may have been compromised,” the report said. The car’s left rear brake rotor was worn below manufacturer specifications, but that did not contribute to the crash. Rodas, 38, and Walker, 40, had taken what was supposed to be a quick ride on a clear afternoon from a fundraiser benefiting Reach Out Worldwide, a Walker charity that gives first-response aid to victims of natural disasters. The crash occurred near the fundraiser, and horrified friends of the men raced to the scene. An unidentified witness said she saw the Porsche “‘jiggling’ back and forth in (its) lane like the driver was jiggling the steering” just before the crash, according to the report. Autopsies showed that neither man had used alcohol or drugs. Investigators found evidence suggesting both wore seat belts and air bags deployed for both the driver and passenger, the sheriff’s department said.

LEOMINSTER — A section of Crawford Street remained closed Wednesday night as police worked at the scene of a single-car crash that sheared a utility pole in two and injured two people. Leominster police said they were called to 89 Crawford St., at 6:56 p.m., and arrived to find a car that struck a utility pole. Fitchburg Fire Deputy Chief Scott Cordio said when crews arrived, there were live wires on the 1996 Cadillac DeVille. Crews had to wait for National Grid to arrive and shut power to the lines down because the “car was energized,” Cordio said. Firefighters removed the 23-year-old male driver and his female passenger. Their names have not been released yet, and it was not clear Wednesday night how old the female was, Cordio said. Cordio described the injuries as “serious,” but added both occupants were conscious and alert the entire time crews were on scene. Police, including the Leominster Police Accident Reconstruction Unit, were on scene along with National Grid, according to police. Crawford Street remained closed Wednesday night while National Grid made “necessary repairs to the pole and any lines that were damaged,” according to Police Sgt.

Investigators: Unsafe speed caused Walker crash

(Ralph Orlowski / Getty Images) By Oliver Gettell March 26, 2014, 10:01 a.m. The car crash that killed “Fast & Furious” star Paul Walker and his friend Roger Rodas was caused by excessive speed that may have topped 93 mph, about twice the speed limit of the curvy road in the Santa Clarita business park where the accident occurred, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigators have determined. According to The Times , investigators used road marks left by the vehicle, a high-performance 2005 Porsche Carrera GT driven by Rodas, to determine that the car was traveling between 80.59 mph and 93.97 mph when it crashed Nov.

Auto Regulator Has 51 People Tracing 250 Million Cars

The NHTSA office reviews consumer complaints for the continuously changing makes and models, which includes 15.4 million newly registered cars and light trucks last year alone, according to IHS Automotive. The agency reviews more than 40,000 consumer complaints a year, which it codes by automotive part, make and model year. Its using more sophisticated data analysis tools, including software provided by International Business Machines Corp. , to find critical content and search for patterns, Naylor said. Its also rolling out new tools for consumers to be able to notify the agency about potential safety defects, he said. Dwindling Staff The Office of Defects Investigation has 51 employees, with more than half being investigators, according to agency data. The number of people working in four divisions that investigate defects was 28 last year, including seven who specialize in trucks. Thats down from 31 in 2002.

Learning The Basics for Car Safety

Either that, or they think that nothing is going to happen to their kid.” Durbin said, however, that “for a lot of poorer families, transportation is complicated.” Many do not own cars and have to borrow from friends or relatives, and it is difficult to lug car seats around, he said. “For a lot of urban families, automotive safety may not rank as a top priority, among food, shelter and violence prevention.” A 2008 Children’s study compared communities with similar socioeconomic characteristics in Norristown and York. In Norristown, information about using booster seats for older children was put in beauty salons, health departments, and faith-based groups. Educational sessions were held in schools and daycare centers. A local fire department offered free booster seats to the first 250 people who attended a meeting where a car-safety video, No Regrets, was shown. None of this was done for the control group in York. Six months after the educational campaign ended, the researchers found a 28 percent increase in booster seat use in the Norristown group, compared with no change in York. And as a bonus, more Norristown adults were found to be using seat belts after the campaign. The study, said Arbogast, proves that the key to reaching the unpersuaded is to enlist messengers respected by their communities.

10 best values in family cars, 2014

Will you be adding to your family? Will you be helping out your aging parents? Will your kids start school, making you part of the carpooling crowd? Safety, safety, safety: Look into the car’s safety features. Check out crash-test ratings, airbag numbers and locations (do the side curtain airbags extend rearward to protect third-row passengers?), and other standard and optional active and passive safety features. Storage: A good variety of compartment space will help keep the family car clutter-free. Activity trays, cupholders and in-door bottleholders allow kids to be independent and keep Mom or Dad’s attention on the road. The cargo area needs to be big enough to comfortably fit the stuff you haul regularly (hockey equipment, Sam’s Club hauls). Make sure the stroller fits in the cargo area and can be lifted in and out easily. Will the roof rails be able to handle the weight your family needs for skis, bikes and storage boxes? Getting in and out: Transporting elderly parents or small children?
