Shafer man dies from snowmobile accident injuries
The Westerly police and fire departments, along with ambulances from Westerly, Charlestown and Ashaway, all responded to the call, which came shortly after 10 a.m. Capt. Shawn Lacey, of the Westerly Police Department, said that responders had to use an extraction tool to remove one of the victims from the vehicle because the passenger-side door had caved in from the crash. The accident occurred outside of the Granite Shopping Center, as the driver of one vehicle attempted to make a left turn into the shopping center. The car traveling in the opposite direction then collided with the first vehicle. The two drivers and two passengers were all taken by ambulance to The Westerly Hospital, though their injuries did not appear to be serious, Lacey said.

Witnesses told authorities they saw Dennis Holt operating a snowmobile he was unfamiliar with when the snowmobile suddenly accelerated and hit a “car-hauler type trailer,” parked near the man’s driveway, according to information provided by the Chisago County sheriff’s office. The incident took place about 11:20 a.m. at a residence in Franconia Township near Shafer. Despite resuscitation efforts of first responders, the 63-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. A left-handed throttle installed on the snowmobile appears to have been a contributing factor in the accident, the sheriff’s office reported.
