HPD: Distracted driver causes crash

REPORTING IN NORTH HOUSTON, COURTNEY GILMORE, KPRC LOCAL 2. POLICE SAY THE VICTIM’S NAME HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED. HOUSTON – Charges have been filed against a suspected drunken driver after a woman who survived a car crash in north Houston was killed in another accident moments after the initial crash. Officials said the first accident happened around 2 a.m. Sunday on the North Loop near the North Freeway. Police said the 21-year-old woman was taking the exit ramp when she lost control of her car and crashed into a barricade. Police said the woman got out of her Chevy Impala and stood in a lane on the freeway. Quick Clicks According to officers, another driver noticed the woman, stopped, and tried to convince her to get back in the car because it was not safe, but the woman refused. Moments later, police said the driver of a Kia hit the Impala, which then hit the woman. The woman died at the scene. The witness who tried to help the woman was not injured. Houston police identified Richard Arroyo, 24, as the driver of the Kia. He was questioned at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 WFTV investigates staged car accidents in central Fla. Related Staged car accidents are a multibillion-dollar a year illegal scheme and Florida leads the nation. Orange County investigators said they are overloaded with cases. Eyewitness News reporter Myrt Price shows how the scheme can even put you and your family in danger. Video of a staged accident was captured during an undercover operation by the Division of Insurance Fraud. In Orange County, an average of 11 phony crashes happen every week, officials said. But investigators are catching on, and arrests are up 27 percent. “We added a second PIP squad, a squad of five detectives just to investigate PIP-related claims,” said an official. Experts said crashes are staged in a couple of scenarios.

We were in the car listening to our music when all of a sudden we heard, boom, said Stewart. We were stopped at the (red) light when the car came out of nowhere and hit multiple cars, Wilson said. Yglesias said all he remembers hearing was the muffler of the vehicle that struck his car. I got lucky or maybe unlucky, said Yglesias. Maybe if the car had hit me harder there wouldnt have been that big of an accident. Kaled Awad, 39, of Jersey City, was on his way to pick up his wife and newborn from the hospital when he heard screeches. He was in the minivan with his two infant kids.
