As many as 303 deaths linked to faulty ignition switches in recalled GM cars

Set to make its motorsport debut on March 23rd, the safety car has been equipped with an assortment of BMW M Performance Parts. Highlights include a front splitter, a black grille and a titanium exhaust system which is surrounded by carbon fiber exhaust finishers. Other M Performance Parts include carbon mirror caps, aerodynamic side skirts, a rear diffuser and a rear spoiler. The car also has a new hood and an LED light bar. Interior pictures were not released but BMW says the car has an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, a carbon gear knob and stainless steel pedals. There’s also Recaro racing seats, Schroth belts and BMW M Performance floor mats. Last but not least, the safety car has a roll bar and a fire extinguisher. Power is provided by a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine that develops 431 HP (317 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.

NHRA Youth Racing will focus on racing knowledge and car safety

The NTSB uses information gathered in the investigations of crashes like the one in Seattle to inform new safety recommendations. NTSB acting deputy Dennis Hogenson said Wednesday that investigators are examining pilot, maintenance, and company records. While it could be a full year before the agency is prepared to release a full report, Mr. Hogenson said that a preliminary report could come in several days. At a televised news conference Tuesday, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray told reporters that the incident could have been a much larger tragedy if it had not taken place so early in the morning. The site of the crash was very near several tourist attractions, including the Space Needle, the monorail, and a music museum. Mayor Murray has ordered a review of helipads in the city. He said regulations have not been updated in more than 20 years. “We need to look at it,” Murray said of the regulations. “In consultation with the council, we will decide if we need to adjust our policies.” An online list of public and private airports suggests that Seattle has a dozen such helipads at TV stations, universities, hospitals, and private corporate sites.

Those recalls, along with last months recall of 1.6 million Chevrolet Cobalts and other models for the ignition switches, will cost the automaker about $300 million in the first quarter, GM said. GM is facing investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Congress and the U.S. Justice Department over why it didnt recall the Cobalts and other vehicles when it first became aware of issues with the cars ignition switches. Boyers appointment is intended to ensure such issues dont avoid detection in the future. He will report to John Calabrese, Vice President of Global Vehicle Engineering and become a member of Global Product Development staff, led by Mark Reuss, Executive Vice President, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. Boyer began his GM career in 1974, as a co-op student and has held several senior engineering, safety and process leadership positions, including the role of a total vehicle integration engineer.

NHTSA could and should have initiated a defect investigation to determine why airbags were not deploying in Cobalts and Ions in increasing numbers, Ditlow wrote to federal safety regulators. GM vigorously challenged Friedmans findings in a statement. As knowledgeable observers know, FARS [fatality analysis reporting systems] tracks raw data. Without rigorous analysis, it is pure speculation to attempt to draw any meaningful conclusions, the automaker said. Because the raw data relates to all front-seat fatalities in which the air bags didnt deploy, the fatalities cannot be directly linked to the ignition problem. The 303 deaths could also be caused by other issues such as a faulty passenger seat air bag detection system. This is certainly a place from which to start looking at crashes to see what might be directly related to the ignition switch, said Sean Kane, president of Safety Research and Strategies, an independent, for-profit safety research company. We need further analysis to see how many of these are related directly to an ignition issue. Both the automaker and NHTSA have come under fire by safety experts for dragging their feet in issuing the recalls. Documents submitted by GM show the automaker was aware of the problem on a prototype Saturn Ion in 2001 and on production models in 2004.

GM Creates Vehicle Safety Job In Wake Of Recall Questions

In fact, to help meet the demand for teenagers wanting to drive fast, the NHRA today announced a new racing program for 13-16-year-olds that combines racing and car safety. NHRA Youth Racing will give teenage boys and girls the opportunity to race against their peers in full-bodied street vehicles with an adult co-driver as their teammate. Competitors will go through an orientation/licensing procedure on an eighth-mile dragstrip in their vehicles, which must meet program requirements. Approved vehicles must be registered, insured, street-legal vehicles with mufflers and street tires and limited to 10 seconds and slower. This is an inexpensive program but, best of all, its a way for families to use drag racing as a learning tool and a conduit for family bonding, said Josh Peterson, NHRA vice president of racing administration. All of NHRAs member tracks are eligible to conduct NHRA Youth Racing activities at their tracks.
